Historic building at St Bernadettes school

Postby edsb » Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:00 pm

I am asking anyone if they know the history of the Spanish style building that was used as a temporary school hall when St Bernadettes school was built in the late 1950s. At that time the building had a cast iron plaque designating it as a historical building by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It is my understanding that the building is now used by a local board of realtors. It is located on San Felipe Drive next to the medical center offices on Stocker. I also saw this building in a Laurel and Hardy movie in which it was the club house for a golf course that extended down the hill to the shopping center at Crenshaw and MLK Blvd (formerly Santa Barbara Street). I recently visited this area but the plaque was gone. I attended St Bernadettes from when it openned till I graduated in 1960. For four years I read and reread that plaque as we used that building for all social and school occasions. The DAR has no record of it but admits that in going from 3 x 5 cards to computer entries much information was wrong or missed. Current photos of the building available upon request. This is a powerful piece of history of Baldwin Hills and View Park that is missing, and that shouldn't be.
Thank you to anyone who can help.

If no one else answers, you might be able to contact St. Bernadette's directly. I was not able to find any email for them, but their phone numbers are:

SCHOOL: (323)291-4284 [4196 Marlton Ave.]
Church: (323) 293-4877

If you find out the history of the building, please let us know here.
